Winter is upon us once again and although the season is cosy and festive, it also comes with many challenges for healthcare workers. Between cold weather and winter bugs, it’s important to stay safe while caring for others. Here are some top tips to get you through the season!
1) Wrap Up Warm
If you’re out and about for work, make sure to layer up with warm clothes like wool or fleece. Don’t skip essentials: a hat, gloves, scarf and sturdy waterproof boots with good grip can make all the difference on icy days!
2) Keep Yourself Healthy
Winter illnesses are everywhere, so take steps to protect yourself and your patients:
- Get your flu jab
- Wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitiser
- Avoid touching your face and eat a balanced diet to boost your immunity
3) Drive Safely
If you’re driving for work, winter roads can be tricky. Prepare your car by checking tyres, keeping the fuel tank topped up and packing an emergency kit with essentials like a blanket and de-icer. Always plan your route and allow extra time for bad weather.
4) Prevent Slips and Trips
Icy pavements and car parks can be dangerous. Reduce your risk by wearing appropriate footwear, walking carefully and using handrails when available. Take advantage of grit or salt when it’s provided around facilities.
5) Look After Your Mental Health
The darker days of winter can affect your mood. Stay positive by getting daylight when you can, staying connected with friends and family and practicing mindfulness or relaxation techniques. If you’re feeling low, don’t hesitate to seek help.
6) Stay COVID-Smart
Winter often brings a rise in respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. Follow NHS guidance by wearing PPE, staying up to date with vaccinations and staying home if you’re unwell.
8) Report Hazards
Spotted something unsafe, like icy paths or broken heating? Report it straight away to your supervisor or health and safety team to keep everyone safe.
